Olive Handmade Leather Dog Collar

$60.00

Handmade full grain vegetable tanned leather dog collars.
Leather: Wickett and Crag Olive Harness Leather. This beautiful Made in USA leather was designed for equestrian harness making. This leather is packed with waxes and oils for a weather-resistant finish, and lighter dyeing that shows the beautiful grain of the leather underneath.

Hardware: Gold hardware consists of solid brass components. Silver hardware consists of chrome plated brass screws and d-rings, with a stainless-steel buckle. Black hardware uses black powder coated buckles and d-rings, with plated brass fasteners. Tag rings are an additional small ring mounted opposite to the buckle to show off your custom Sirius Metal Tags! These smaller rings should not be used to attach leashes or leads.

Fit: Each collar is made to measure. Use a soft tape measure to find the circumference of your dog’s neck and enter it above. We will use this measurement to set the center hole from the base of the buckle. Each collar comes with 5 holes to ensure fit, with 2 holes shorter, and 2 holes longer than the given length.
Recommended Width: We can make any length of collar with any given width.

However, we don’t recommend very wide collars for small breeds, nor narrow collars for very large dogs. Here is our recommended width chart for a given collar size:
Small (11” – 14”): 1”
Medium (15” – 18”): 1.25”
Large (19” – 22”): 1.5”

We can make collars longer, smaller, narrower, or wider than the given chart. Please contact us for custom dimensions.

Veg Tanned: All our collars are made from full grain veg tanned leather. Full grain means this leather has the pores intact, allowing you to add conditioners and leather balms to help prolong the life of your product. Veg tanning is a preservation process that uses natural roots, barks, and tannins. As compared to chrome tanning (which uses a harmful chromium chemical solution) the resulting leather is firmer, sturdier, and longer lasting. Today, less than 10% of leathers are prepared this way as it is more labour intensive and takes longer to prepare, but the final product is sturdier and by-products are not environmentally harmful. The vegetable tan process also allows us to create a polished burnished edge that will last longer and can easily be touched up as the collar wears, unlike folded or unfinished collar edges that will fray with time.

While vegetable tanned full grain leathers are sturdier than chrome tanned leathers, it is less waterproof than its chrome-tanned or latigo counterparts. While the leather will not be ruined from water exposure, it will need to be thoroughly dried and conditioned if it is ever soaked. Vegetable tanned leathers are also more susceptible to patina and marking. This patina process shows history and unique character as the leather ages and will not degrade the strength of the collar.
